Aomori winters are long and bitter. The people of this area brighten their spirits with winter festivals in February. The traditional Enburi is known as one of the three major winter festivals in Aomori. Dancers wearing gorgeous horse-head headdresses dance to the music of drums and flutes. The dance is the peoples' prayer for an abundant harvest, and it is designated as a significant intangible folk cultural asset. The Aomori Winter Festival is enjoyed by young and old, and features a huge slide made with snow. At the Hirosaki Castle Snow Lantern Festival, the Castle and about 500 snow lanterns and snow statues are lighted up, turning the area to a world of fantasy. Another event in February is Towadako Fuyu Monogatari, which is a romantic snow and fireworks event held in the cold crisp air.

Hirosaki Castle, a famous scenic spot for cherry blossoms, is a spectacular sight in winter. Founded in 1977, the Hirosaki Yuki-doro Festival is one of the 5 great snow festivals in the Michinoku area. Residents make the lanterns for the Yuki-doro Festival during the long, cold winters of the northland to make it even more enjoyable.
