Aomori’s forestry industry has thrived for a very long time. Shirakami Sanchi is famous for its natural beech forests as well as the Aomori cypress forest, considered one of the 3 most beautiful forests in Japan. These rich forest resources led to the development of unique woodwork. The nearly 300 year history of Tsugaru lacquerware began in about the middle of the Edo Period, and can be called the ultimate traditional craft that flourished in the northernmost region in Honshu. Tsugaru lacquerware is a method of coating wood with lacquer, drying, then burnishing with sandstone and this process is repeated over the course of several months. The pattern that emerges is strong and its depth is quite different from glazed ware. It has become a treasured favorite among lacquerware connoisseurs.
One of the toys found in Hachinohe in the Nanbu area is called the Yawatauma. This carved wooden horse originated approximately 700 years ago. Later, farmers started carving wooden horses as side jobs during the off-season and sold them at the Kushihiki-Hachimangu festival. Today, it is a popular souvenir of the Nanbu area.
Nuruyu Onsen Hot Spring is the birthplace of Nuruyu Kokeshi dolls, one of several types of Tsugaru Kokeshi doll. The soft and smooth line of the dolls curved waist is only found in the Nuruyu Kokeshi, and it is also characteristic of the Aynu pattern or peony flower, the family crest of the Tsugaru family.

Tsugaru Lacquerware
