Hirosaki Neputa Festival
About 70 gorgeous Neputa floats parade the town. Designated as a national important intangible folk-cultural property in 1980. Held from Aug 1st to 7th.
Hirosaki Neputa Festival is a unique summer festival with the parade of
70 fan-shaped Neputa floats featuring warrior legends, and doll-shaped
Neputa floats. Along with the cheer "Ya-ya dou", the parade takes over the city streets and lights up Tsugaru's summer night sky.
Although there are various theories about the origin of Neputa, the theory
of which Neputa is originated from "Nemuri Nagashi", the ritual casting out drowsiness and laziness which distract farmers to work during busy summer season is generally accepted. Hirosaki Neputa Festival was designated as a national important intangible folk-cultural property in January 1980.
Now the Neputa floats such as the ones carried by children, and smaller floats leading the larger floats are made in a variety of designs. Towns are filled with the soft glow of those floats and echo the sounds of flutes and drums.
