The snowmelt season coincides with the start of spring outing season in Aomori.

In March, enthusiastic skiers enjoy spring skiing on the mountains that remain snow-covered. Mt. Hakkoda and Lake Towada are connected by the Gold Line which is closed for the traffic until April 1. “Hakkoda Walk” is the event held on March 29-31 to enjoy walking the Gold Line thoroughly enclosed with the walls of snow. Many visitors appreciate the solemn beauty of Mt. Hakkoda.

Trees and plants break into buds all at once as snow melts away after April in Aomori, and most of all, cherry blossom represents spring in Aomori.

Cherry blossom festivals in Hirosaki-City, Aomori-City, Kanagi-cho in Goshogawara-City, Mutsu-City and Hachinohe-City are well known in Aomori-Prefecture. The most well-known “Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festivel” is held around the consecutive national holidays every year, which draws 2 million visitors from all over Japan. This festival is definitely one of the most popular cherry blossom festivals in Japan.

Hirosaki Park is home to 2,600 cherry trees of 50 different varieties. Cherry blossoms in Hirosaki feature the clusters of blossoms by applying the advanced apple tree pruning techniques of the area. 5 or 6 flowers bloom out of one bud while the average is 3 or 4 flowers, and those well-cared for trees also feature the overhanging branches with flower clusters within the visitors’ reach which keep attracting large crowds.

Even the best time of viewing cherry blossom is over, spring still goes on in Aomori. In the middle of May, apple blossoms start to bloom. The tiny and lovely apple blossoms take on a different aspect of Aomori spring scenery from the one of cherry blossoms. May is also the month which kicks off the busy season of trekking in Aomori such as Shirakami mountain range, Mt. Hakkoda and Mt. Iwaki.

So spring can be the best season to fully enjoy abundant and beautiful nature of Aomori.
